What has 38 legs and can park 25,000 cars in three days? Tehachapi Civil Air Patrol Squadron 46. For three days, the 19 members of the Tehachapi squadron parked over 25,000 cars for the 50th anniversary of the Famoso March Meet at Famoso Raceway.
The 50th installment of the March Meet saw records in both speed and crowds. On Saturday, March 1, there were over 35,000 spectators. That number alone surpassed attendance totals on past March Meets. The cadets from Squadron 46 directed cars, motorcycles and motorhomes to their parking rows and spaces. This is their 6th year participating in this fundraiser.
Cadet Commander, Senior Master Sergeant Zachary Crosby, commented on the dedication and great attitude of the cadets.
He said, “We were out in the sun from 7:30 a.m. until after 4:30 p.m. Never did I hear a complaint from any of these great cadets.”
The cadets were also surprised to see the US Air Force sponsored A-Fuel Dragster “piloted” by Kin Bates. Bates further surprised the cadets by asking them to escort the team to the staging line for his second qualifying run. After posing for a picture, Bates posted the second fastest run of the meet and then went on to win his class the next day.
The cadets are raising funds to help support great events like the recent color guard competition that took place at Vandenberg Air Force Base where Cadets Davita Heavener, Zachary Crosby, Michael Riley, Nico Lopez, and Matthew Lopez competed against squadrons from all of California. This Color Guard group took 1st place in the Indoor Formal portion of the event. The squadron is always looking for new members. Interested personnel can call Cadet Crosby at 822-3750 or 972-5763 or Cadet Riley at 822-5803 or 972-5490. Meetings are Wednesdays at 6 p.m. at the Tehachapi Airport, 314 North Hayes St.
