The Warriors may have had a rough start, but the important wins have still been recorded, defeating Shafter 10-5 last Friday to notch their second overall and league victory on the season.
Spearheaded by a stellar week by Johnny Holguin, who had 12 strikeouts on the week in eight innings pitched, Tehachapi played one of their best defensive games of the year in a 1-0 loss to Taft last Tuesday and staved off the hot bats of the Generals in the late week victory.
“It feels good to get the win, we are continuing to get better,” said head coach Dennis Costa. “We’re a much different team that started this season.”
Tehachapi pulled away from Shafter with a seven run fourth inning, sending 12 batters to the plate in the mid game marathon. Sean Arbaut led the game with three runs scored, followed by Johnny Holguin with two runs and Adrian Hurtado, Robert Berryman, Brock Tessandori, Trevor Burtz, and Robert Siegmund all rounding home plate.
Burtz also recorded a double and two RBIs in a 2-2 batting day.
“We have the talent, it’s just getting the time in together and getting everyone on the same page,” added Costa. “We’ve had an opportunity to do that in practice and we’ll continue to raise our level of play.”
Robert Berryman got the start in the contest against the Generals, allowing only two runs on five hits before being spelled by Holguin, who finished the game with six strikeouts.
Tehachapi can tie Bakersfield Christian for the league lead this Tuesday on the road prior to capping the week with a home game against Arvin this Friday. Both games will start at 4 p.m.
