Tennis notches key wins

The varsity boys tennis team extended their overall record to 6-1 (3-1 SSL) with a close 5-4 match victory over Wasco last Thursday. Tyler Thoms (6-3, 6-1), Ryan Grisso (6-1, 6-1), Marc Keehmer (6-2, 1-6, 10-4) and Austin Zehr (6-2, 6-0) won in singles to help give Tehachapi the win.

Earlier in the week, the Warriors suffered a minor blow when fourth singles player Kevin Cunningham was forced to retire with a knee injury, forcing him to forfeit his singles match and scratch from doubles against Taft. The default resulted in a 5-4 win for the Wildcats, but Cunningham is expected to be ready for action against a big match-up with Bakersfield Christian later on this week.

In the junior varsity division, Tehachapi (6-0; 4-0 SSL) remains undefeated with a 6-3 win over Taft, with Derek Boutte, Joe Theisen, Sam Carter and Jimmy Boyd winning in singles and the tandems of Jonathan Johnson/Nathan Rowe, Dan Gilliam/Joe Theisen and Derek Boutte/Jimmy Boyd winning in doubles.

TVWC youth wrestling

Tehachapi Valley Wrestling Club is having youth practices this Tuesday, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Tehachapi High School wrestling room, located in the gymnasium complex. Ages 5 to 18 are invited to attend practices every Tuesday and Thursday. The cost of the program is $75, which includes a USA wrestling card, a club t-shirt and guarantees club membership until September of 2008.
