The 2008 Tehachapi High School Career Fair is taking place today in the THS gym. Students ranging from grades 8 to 12 continue to gather to explore career and education opportunities from a variety of institutions and organizations.

As usual, the Lancaster Beauty school booth received the attention of a plethora of curious students.

A rainbow assortment of combs and nail polish caught the eye of curious passers by, who stopped to get their nails and hair done by Cosmetology students.

Lancaster Beauty School receives applications from high school students frequently.

“At least 25 people from high school came in yesterday,” says Kimberly Dearling, whi enrolled in Lancaster Beauty School in March.

Carrina Carroll, a Junior at Tehachapi High School, is currently working on her Cosmetology degree.

“It’s only a 1,600 hour course,” explained Carroll.  “It takes a cool minute and a vision.”

According to Dearling, the annual salary of a Cosmetologist depends on location, work hours, and clientele.

“You see what other people are charging and you compete with that,” elaborated Carroll.

Students shared their views on the profession while crowding excitedly around the booth.

“I think Cosmetology is a good career because you can work at your own leisure and help people feel better about themselves,” says Leslie Cooper, a Junior from Monroe High School.

“I think [being a cosmetologist] would be hard,” added Senior Britney Wahlstrom, “because you work on people.  They might get mad if you do something wrong.”

Contrary to popular belief, Cosmetology is a serious career path that requires serious time and dedication.

“It’s really time consuming,” says Gabbi Murren, enrolled since September.  “You have to be committed to it.  It’s not just something you do if you’re not willing to work.”

Students with a genuine interest in Cosmetology should know that it is not only enjoyable, but also practical.

“Once you do it, you can always fall back on it,” explained Angela Lopez, a life-long Cosmetology enthusiast enrolled since September.  ‘You’ll have something to do for the rest of your life."

Lancaster Beauty School has been serving students for over 45 years with a current pass rate of over 90 percent with the Board of Cosmetology. They are accredited by the National Accrediting Commission of Cosmetology Arts and Sciences (NACCAS) and are located at 44646 N. 10th St. West Lancaster, CA 93534.  Visit www.lancatserbeautyschool.com for more details.
