Spring is a time to celebrate! Not just because of the warming up of the weather and the beauty of trees and flowers in bloom, but also because April 13th through the 19th this year was designated as National Library Week, a time to celebrate the wonderful resource of free knowledge that is available to us. The month of April, traditionally thought of as the first month of spring, has also been chosen as National Poetry Month, celebrating the use of language in a vivid and imaginative way. Because of the unlimited opportunity we all have to enjoy poetry in its many forms from our libraries, and also because our students here at Golden Hills School seem to enjoy the flowering of language so much, the Golden Hills Library sponsored a poetry contest, wherein students could write a poem about anything having to do with libraries, books, or reading. More than 60 students participated, and all students who wrote a poem (some wrote 6!) received a journal notebook to encourage their continued writing endeavors.
First Prize winners at each grade level were: 1st grade: Anika Valentino; 2nd grade: Merrill Graham; 3rd grade: Taylor Williams; 4th grade: Sophia Topete; 5th grade: Kaylee Lambert.
Reading by Anika Valentino, 1st Grade
I love reading, I love books.
When I read, I get hooked.
When I go to the Library,
I come out with a very good book.
The Library by Merrill Graham, Grade 2
Libraries are sweet.
Libraries are neat.
Books are cool, like a pool
Books spread information in nations.
Libraries are sweet, like a treat.
Books by Taylor Williams
I like books,
They make me laugh,
I like to look at them,
And take the right path.
They make me go to the library,
And read,
So I can take out the key,
And seek,
I find
Books that are funny,
And also very sunny.
Books Are For Me by Sophia Topete, Grade 4
So many books I want to read
Cause it’s my mind I want to feed,
I want to unravel my imagination,
And with each story
Travel to a new location.
That is why I must insist,
Never to forget adding
A new book to my list.
Books are great!
Books are fun!
Books give knowledge
To everyone.
The library is a “happenin’”
Place for me.
The library is a world
Where my mind can run free,
It’s a place filled with wonder,
Books! Books! Books!
Are what I hunger.
Reading by Kaylee Lambert, Grade 5
Reading is fun,
And I like it a ton.
If you don’t like reading,
Don’t go stampeding,
Because without it,
I think your heart will start
Bleeding.
