The annual Tehachapi High School Career Fair started early Thursday morning and lasted until the end of the school day. Students through all grade levels were able to learn about the career paths available to them. Students had the opportunity to speak to representatives from seven colleges throughout the state and find out what it takes to get into them.
California State University at Bakersfield (CSUB) was represented and seems to specialize in nourishment and Liberal Studies. CSUB’s representative stated that this year there have been more students than expected that were interested in attending.
“We are mostly here just for recruitment,” said the CSUB representative. “We usually have a lot of kids coming down here from Tehachapi, so it’s a good place to come”
With the average tuition cost of nearly $12,000 per year, the convenience of the nearby campus makes it an affordable local option for many students.
One of the other schools that attended the career fair was Hope International University, which is located on the Pacific Coast. This is a Christian based school offering small class sizes with the average of only 18 students.
“A lot of Tehachapi students ask about Hope,” said the University’s representative.
He said there are about three students graduating from THS this year that are planning to attend Hope. The average acceptance GPA is 2.5, and tuition costs were estimated at $21,500 a year.
Fresno State was expected to attend, but could not come, and the representative from University of California at Merced was not available for comment.
Overall, colleges and universities in California offer a wide variety of career paths to students interested in all things. Hopefully, today’s Career Fair helped to clear some things up about where students hope to spend the next two to four years of their life.
