Councilman Ed Grimes, speaking on behalf of current Mayor Deborah Hand, gave the opening remarks during the April 30 “National Prayer Day” ceremonies conducted in front of Tehachapi City Hall.
“In these troubled times it seems they are trying through the courts to take this [public prayer] away from us,” Grimes said continuing on, “It's nice to see so many God fearing people here today who believe in prayer.”
Following Grimes’ remarks, local Boy Scout Troop 123 posted the National Colors. The Pledge of Allegiance was then followed by the singing of the National Anthem.
Pastors Ron Barker, Wes Clare, Doug Cowan, Marvin Slifer and retired Pastor Ted Stone each offered prayers of “Thanks” as well as asking the Lord to “Continue guiding our nation’s leaders through these troubled times.”
Joined prayer they offered, “Our profound gratitude and thanks to our military leaders, and the men and women of the armed forces who continue to see multiple tours of duty to the world’s hot spots.”
Prayers of guidance focused on protecting public safety officers and encouraging people everywhere to, “live, teach and follow Christian values every day.”
In 1988, President Ronald Reagan amended and strengthened the law allowing for public prayer and proclaimed that the first Thursday of every May shall be a “Day of National Prayer.”
