On May 4 at about 10 p.m., the Sheriff's Dept. Search and Rescue Unit was contacted by Tehachapi Police Dept. and told 48 year old Guy Hoffman did not return to his home in Tehachapi from a motorcycle riding trip.
Hoffman's wife located Guy's truck on Jawbone Canyon Rd. Guy was riding alone and it was not known for certain where he was planning to ride.
The Desert and Kern Valley Search and Rescue Groups began searching the Jawbone Canyon and Piute Mountain areas for Hoffman. At about 2:30 on May 5, a search team located Hoffman walking on Jawbone Canyon Rd. near Kelso Valley Rd. Hoffman said his motorcycle ran out of gas in the Piute Mountains above Kern Valley. He had been trying to find his way back to his truck since about 10 p.m. the previous evening.
Hoffman was not injured, but had not taken water with him and was very thirsty and tired. Hoffman said he realizes he should not have gone out riding in an unfamiliar area by himself and should always take water along.
