A Jacobsen Middle School teacher has been placed on paid administrative leave after a 14-year-old female student filed a complaint of “inappropriate touching” with the Tehachapi Police Department (TPD) on May 2. No names have been released.
“Based upon the witness statements and the nature of the touching, it does not appear that the contact was sexual in nature. As such, the case is being investigated as a possible misdemeanor battery occurring on school property,” said Tehachapi’s Chief of Police, Jeff Kermode. “The student was not injured and the teacher has not been arrested. Upon completion of the investigation, the TPD will submit the case to the Kern County District Attorney for a determination as to the filing of charges.”
TUSD Superintendent Dr. Richard Swanson confirmed that the complaint was initiated by the student after an alleged May 1 incident on board a district school bus en route to a school event. A report was made to TPD’s School Resource Officer.
Witnesses to the incident said the teacher nudged the student’s propped-up legs after she failed to respond to repeated requests to sit properly and not block the aisle.
