A group of about 50 new and old friends gathered for a Garden Party at the Errea House last week. The Tehachapi Heritage League issued an invitation to volunteers, docents and donors to visit the Errea House and Garden, now in its springtime glory. The garden is always open for visitors who want to stop by and see the 1900 era cottage garden at 311 South Green Street.
Visitors were also invited to visit inside the Errea House for a preview of the photo exhibit which will be fully installed for the June 19 Ice Cream Social, also open to the public. Several founding members of the 35 year-old Heritage League attended, several who are now retired from public service. It was an opportunity for volunteers who have worn many hats to get together to meet some of the newer volunteers who serve as docents at the museum.
Dottie Newton who worked for many years to help keep the Tehachapi Museum open to the public, Mary Farrell Haubrich whose many years of serving as Garden Chairperson and Del Troy, local historian, joined others, including volunteers from the Tehachapi Rose and Garden Society for appetizers, desserts, wine, punch and coffee.
There were interested newcomers as well, including those who have recently moved to Tehachapi for its small town flavor and want to get involved in local activities. Like many local organizations, the Tehachapi Heritage League operates a small business with volunteer labor and a budget based on donations.
There are many opportunities for volunteers, including Educational Outreach to help plan and implement educational programs for children and adults. Museum Docents are needed to staff the Tehachapi Museum and the Errea House, either on a permanent basis or for special events.
We particularly need help with data input to enter artifact information into our specialized museum software, to make the information more easily accessible. Fund Raising and Grant Writing help is needed to research and prepare grants to help with museum expenses and for special projects to further our goals of education and preservation of our history.
The Errea Garden Committee needs hands for maintaining the garden, as well as planning and installing walks and beds for our new rose garden, behind the Errea House. Periodically, we gather a group to clean and maintain the grounds around the Museum and for small, one-time projects. All hands are welcome.
If you want to volunteer, even if you don't have the time to serve on an ongoing committee, let us know and you can work occasionally on special projects. To volunteer, call Charles White at 972-0958.
