The International Test and Evaluation Association (ITEA), whose mission is to further the exchange of technical information in the field of test and evaluation, recently awarded a grant of $5,000 to the Tehachapi High School For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) Robotics Team. Their generous grant will fund a sensor and motor test bench to help train THS students in robotics, physics and test and evaluation principles.
The test bench will also be available for use to Tehachapi High Engineering and Manufacturing Academy (THEMA) and physics class students. Robotics team members learn program management, budgeting, engineering, construction, programming and testing, after which they compete in regional and national competitions with high school teams from around the world.
Since 2001, the Cyber Penguins FIRST Robotics Team has participated in eleven regional competitions, four national competitions (including a near-National Championship), placing in website, safety, and animation honors, and Delphi’s “Driving Tomorrow’s Technology” award. This past season, THS received the Judges’ Award based on Tehachapi’s robot demonstrating unique effort, performance, or dynamics, and the Autodesk Visualization Award from Autodesk, Inc. for recognized excellence in student animation that clearly and creatively illustrates the spirit of the FIRST Robotics Competition. Both honors were received at a west-regional in Las Vegas.
