The 4th of July holiday is upon us, and celebrations are scheduled throughout the community. The Kern County Fire Department and the City of Tehachapi would like to remind everyone that the use of any personal fireworks is prohibited in the mountains and foothills of Kern County including the entire Tehachapi area.
Fireworks are not allowed for use by the general public because the Tehachapi area is located within the hazardous wildfire area as defined by the State of California. Any fireworks used by other than professional pyrotechnicians pose a significant fire ignition threat that could have disastrous results. The recent destructive fire at the railroad depot, which was caused by fireworks use, and the current severe fire situation in California, reinforce the need to refrain from using any fireworks.
The Kern County Fire and Sheriffs Departments and the Tehachapi Police Department will respond to reports of fireworks and those identified as using fireworks will be cited and the fireworks confiscated. The consequences of the illegal use of fireworks include fines of up to 1,500 dollars and possible jail time. Those responsible for causing a fire can be held liable for all fire suppression costs.
The City of Tehachapi will provide a safe, and free, fireworks show at 9p.m. Friday, July Fourth at the airport. Please help your firefighters and law enforcement officers protect your community, your neighbors, and your family by not using fireworks in Tehachapi.
