A collection of classical music CDs has been donated to Tehachapi Library by the Tehachapi Community Orchestra Board. With over 150 titles in the collection, it will take some time to catalog them all. When this is accomplished, the CD’s may be checked out for three weeks at a time. Librarian Kris Duke expressed her appreciation for the donation. She is pleased to have classical music available and hopes the public will enjoy listening to the CDs.
Orchestra Board President Gayel Pitchford proposed donating the collection to bring the beauty and enjoyment of classical music to all segments of the community. Studies have shown that students with experience in music perform better on various tests. Music often has a calming effect on listeners. A researcher in Colorado discovered plants grow better when exposed to classical music as opposed to acid rock music. Pitchford believes music plays an important role in determining the character and direction of civilization.
Tehachapi Community Orchestra Board hopes the CDs will be played and enjoyed for many years by both children and adults.
People are encouraged to attend any of the five concerts the orchestra performs each year free of charge. The eleventh season for TCO begins in September with the first concert on November 2. It features Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue as well as Symphony #3 by Schumann. For more information about the orchestra, call 823-8249.
