After the loss to Mayfield, the Southern-California state no.4 seed in Division III, tears and hugs could be seen around the gym from the Tehachapi contingent in attendance.
While the Lady Warriors did lose to Mayfield-Senior (25-11, 25-11, 25-14), the tears were not because of the defeat, but a reflection of joy on the season that was.
“We have grown every year as a program and we grew as a team this year as well,” said head coach Sally White. “I’m very proud of what we accomplished. This was an amazing group.”
After falling behind 10-0 in the opening game, Tehachapi rallied for six-straight points before eventually falling. Game two was also closely contested early on when Shelby Flick scored a service winner to put the game score at 8-7 in favor of Mayfield (27-5-1).
“We love the challenge of playing on this level, this stage,” added White. “We feel that it makes us stronger and we’re excited about our future and coming back.”
Persephonie Devereaux led Tehachapi with four kills and five blocks, while Sarah Horcher had three kills and three digs. Aly Pulford led the team on serve with eight points overall.
Tehachapi (33-6) set a record this season with the most wins ever amassed by a South Sequoia League team. The Lady Warriors, who have reached the CIF championship game three out of the last four years, will say goodbye to three seniors who have been instrumental in that success in Natalie Schulgen, Aly Pulford and Sam Nunnally.
“We have nothing to hang our heads about,” said head coach Sally White. “We have great attitudes with our girls, very well rounded both in talent and personality. We appreciate our seniors and the legacy that they have left. We are very excited about the future as well.”
