Tehachapi soccer got their year off to a solid start in scrimmage action over North-Bakersfield last week, with the Lady Warriors tying the Stars 1-1 and the Lady Braves taking a 1-0 win.
Jacqi Edwards scored the Warrior goal with a shot to the back right corner from the left side of the field, while Kendyl Stephens and Selena Demus split time at keeper, allowing only a penalty kick score in the first half.
The Lady Braves had 14 shots on goal to North’s five, with Allyson Sanders recording her first shutout of the year at keeper for the Lady Braves. The lone goal came when Cheyenne Morigeau sent a cross from the right side to the goal box to the waiting feet of Briana Coster, who put the ball into the back of the net.
The defensive unit of Taylor Stainer, Kassidy Stephens and Alex Haleluk worked hard to shut down the North offensive attack with a ‘bend but don't break’ philosophy.
"I wasn't sure what to expect at this scrimmage because we had a huge turnover from last year, and most of these girls are new to our system and style of play,” said head coach Bob Papac. “At the onset of the match, I think our girls were pretty nervous, being their first high school game, but they settled in fairly quickly and really began to step up their play as the match progressed."
Mountain Soccer will have two home games this week against Garces (Wednesday – 5 p.m. JV, 6:30 p.m. Varsity) and Desert Christian (Friday – 3 p.m. JV, 4:30 p.m. Varsity)
