In response to Sam Walden’s Letter to the editor regarding Wal-Mart: you don’t suppose that the information about all the good that Wal-Mart does and the “high” wages they pay, that comes to you courtesy the Wal-Mart website might be just a little lopsided?
The only reason the “average” wages are over $10 an hour is because the managers and executives make considerably more than that, while the workers get stiffed. Even at $10 an hour, if you are only allowed to work 30 hours a week, therefore not qualifying for benefits, what good does that do for a struggling family?
As to saving gas by not having to go down the hill, even if we had three WalMarts here in town, most people will still have to go down the hill for many reasons. The secret to saving gas is to plan your trips and accomplish several things in one trip. I use it as an excuse to see my grandchildren. I don’t care if it is considered wasting fuel to Mr. Walden

Uh Duh...in what corporation does the management and executives NOT make more than the employees? You have completely missed the point. 10 bucks an hour for 30 hours a week is more than any, any teenager or senior will make in the town. And as far as driving down the hill, go ahead drive. I prefer to have all my shopping needs withen the town I live in. Maybe your veiws are lopsided, you live here and you try and stop progress. LET WAL MART INTO TEHACHAPI NOW!

I agree that those "average" wages wouldn't support a family but as said above me, that would be great pay for a first job or a senior that needs extra income. I totally support a Walmart coming here. Right now, I choose to shop out of town, not necessarily because I don't want to support local businesses or because they don't have what I need here, but because stores are just too crowded. I don't want to have to get up at the crack of dawn or shop late at night to avoid peak times at Kmart or the grocery stores, so I shop in Bakersfield or Lancaster where they actually have enough of these kinds of stores to support the population and even out the shopping choices. There are just too many people here now to have only 2 major grocery stores and one discount retailer to support the population in Tehachapi. We've outgrown these businesses. Have you tried to park in the Save Mart shopping center on a weekday around noon or between the hours of 3-6? It's a parking nightmare! We need other stores. If you've moved here because it's a quaint, small town, you've been misled. If you don't want walmart because you want this place to stay small, it's too late. I think we need a larger variety of stores here to make Tehachapi more livable and to support this population that continues to grow.

I wonder why people focus in on Wal Mart as such a big bad ugly monster. Yes, working for what Wal Mart typicaly pays is hard, if not impossible to supprot a family. With no benefits it is even harder. However, Wal Mart is not alone. I remember a long time ago. Before Kmart, Save Mart and Albertsons, my mother worked for a little store here in town. I won't say the name because some people may still remember the place. They worked her just long enough, around 30 to 35 hours a week, to where they didn't have to provide any benefits. They were a small town outfit. Working employees just short enough to not have to offer benefits is not something that Wal Mart came up with. It has been around a long time. As for driving down the hill. I only go to Bakersfield when I can't avoid it. If Wal Mart comes up here, there is one less reason I will be forced to breath the smog.

All of the comments are excellent ideas why a Walmart would be good for this communtiy, and for all you negative neds/nellies, you might remember one very importand idea. This is the United States of America, the land of the free and the home of the brave. The word democracy guarantees "free" enterprise and competition, and right now, as for hundreds of years, men and women are fighting to protect the freedom's of our country, so Walmart has as much right to be here as all those businesses that have come before.

To compare a small business who doesn’t offer health care to Wal-Mart is not a fair comparison when Wal-Mart is the biggest retailer in the country, profiting nearly 96% more profits than the number 2 retailer Home Depot. It’s not okay for Wal-Mart to not pay taxes, commit fraud and engage in other illegal activity.
