Fifth-grade Golden Hills Elementary School student Edward Bear placed second in the 19th annual Kern County Regional Science Fair on March 29.
Edward based his project on a television show he had watched about how rain had affected the cement pillars in a riverfront construction project.
He decided to test his theory of how water would affect the strength of cement blocks. He constructed eight blocks, each with a different ratio of water to cement.
He was quite surprised to discover that too little as well as too much water made the cement blocks weak. He originally thought less water meant a stronger concrete block.
“My favorite part of the project was breaking the cement block and measuring the strength it took to break. Science is one of my favorite subjects,” Edward said.
Approximately 600 students in grades four to 12 from 115 schools competed in the county wide science fair. Categories ranged from aerodynamics to zoology. The entries were judged on scientific thought and engineering goals, creativity, organization, clarity, effort and motivation. Students also were interviewed and asked to explain their displays to a panel of judges.
