With inclement weather forcing the South Sequoia League to stack some match-ups in the midseason, Tehachapi faced off with Wasco in a double-header last Friday, with the Tigers taking the first game 2-1 and the Warriors winning the night-cap, 4-0.
With the split, Tehachapi (6-6; 3-1 SSL) moves into second behind SSL leader Taft, who is sporting a 3-4 (1-0 SSL) record.
In the 2-1 loss against Wasco, Tehachapi pitcher JJ Holguin allowed only one earned run on two hits and had 10 strikeouts. Nathan McKinnon took to the mound in the second game, pitching a two-hitter himself with five K’s to his credit, along with getting two hits at the plate.
“Both pitchers played very well,” said Warrior head coach Dennis Costa. “Unfortunately we didn’t get two wins, but there really wasn’t a let down at all after dropping the first (contest), they were pretty focused heading into both games.”
Tehachapi will have three games this week against Taft, with the results of the game having early implications on the league title favorite. The first game against the Wildcats will be at Tehachapi on Tuesday at 4 p.m., while the latter games will be Thursday and Friday in Taft, with both contests set to start at 4 p.m.
“It’s early in the season, there is still a lot of baseball to go,” added Costa. “Having two of the games away and back-to-back long drives is a concern, but we should be fine and we’ll be up to the challenge.”
