After the game was over and Tehachapi stood victorious with a 2-1 victory, Warrior head coach Tracy Goodell called the game against Taft “the biggest win in the last five years.”
Facing the defending SSL champion, who in 2005 did not give up a single run in league en route to a 16-6 (9-0 SSL) season, it’s safe to say that coach Goodell’s assessment was right.
“Our girls really stepped up to the challenge (against Taft),” said Goodell. “They didn’t let their guard down and they fought the whole game to get a win against a very good softball team.”
Taft got on top of the Lady Warriors (7-3-1; 2-0 SSL) at the top of the fourth to take a 1-0 lead, and were looking to cruise on to the win in the SSL opener after shutting down Tehachapi in six straight innings.
However, in the bottom of the seventh, the Warriors went to work. Caitlyn Seigmund got on base to put the tying run aboard, then Kayla Kapitzke belted a shot past the infield for a walk-off two-run homer and the final count of 2-1. It was Kaptizke’s first home run of the season, finishing the game 1-3 with two RBIs.
Warrior pitcher Katie Snapp got the win with seven solid innings of work and no earned runs, while Seigmund went 2-3 in the game with a run scored and Korrie Ingraham went 1-3.
Later on in the week, Tehachapi made quick work of Golden Valley, taking down the Bulldogs in a 10-0 drubbing. Tehachapi logged in 11 hits overall in the game, with Kasie Muro going 3-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Michelle Baxter, Muro, Ingraham and Seigmund each logged in two hits in the game, while Senior Lindsay Romo recorded a home run, her second of the season. Baxter recorded the win in the contest, pitching seven innings with only four runs allowed.
Tehachapi will look to continue their dominance in the SSL this week with a pair of home games, a Tuesday game against Arvin and a Thursday game against Shafter. Both games are slated to start at 4 p.m.
“I think if we can stay focused and continue to play like we are in league, we can take it all the way,” said Goodell.
