On Thursday, April 6, I was returning from Kern River after a day of golfing with some friends when we acquired a flat tire on Red Apple Avenue and Triple A was contacted.
Ten minutes later, Kern County Senior Deputy Lee Walters came along and spotted my dilemma. He was on his way to the station to complete his tour of duty, but Deputy Walters immediately turned on his emergency lights and came to my assistance.
After informing him that Triple A had been contacted, he said “let’s just change the tire ourselves.” I noticed his very neat, clean uniform and didn’t want him to get dirty by helping with the flat, but he informed us that we could work as a team to get it done before Triple A arrived.
Not wanting to argue with a police officer’s recommendation, my buddy Ken and I located the tire changing tools to get started. Deputy Walters then took charge by saying “let’s do it.”
Before we could even get started, Deputy Walters was under the vehicle looking for a good spot to put the jack.
We tried to help as much as possible but must admit that Deputy Walters did 99 percent of the work. After getting the tire changed, he insisted that I take it to the nearest tire repair store to get it checked.
The spare was about half flat by the time I got to The Tire Store. (Thank you, Tire Store for the immediate response and excellent service.)
I am writing this article to thank Deputy Walters for his help. His assistance was way beyond the call of duty and I want to let the good people of Tehachapi know what an outstanding and dedicated police officer this community has.
Kudos to you, Deputy Walters.
