In 1996, playwright Steven Dietz experimented with alternate realities in his successful comedy “Private Eyes.” Dietz takes his interest in parallel lives to a whole new dimension in Tehachapi Community Theatre’s production of “Rocket Man.” Directed by Mark Walker and Yumi Oh.
Rocket Man poses philosophical and most definitely comical questions about the big choices in life. If, like the lead character Donny, we've failed at a career and made a mess of fatherhood and marriage, could we somehow go back and make everything right? Is there another place where we get a second chance?
Donny hopes so. He had dreamed of becoming a landscape architect who would reshape the earth using the stars' constellations as patterns. Things didn't work out as planned, so he's put all his earthly belongings of his four decades out on the front lawn and posted a sign that says: "Here's My Life. Make an Offer."
Walker and Oh have put together a lyrical and witty piece, literally a work of armchair philosophy, a comedy with a twist. However, the cast and crew ask that once you've seen it not to give away the secret.
Speaking of cast, audiences are in for a treat with some of TCT’s finest on stage. Playing the lead of the beleaguered Donny is Gary Mazzola. Donny’s eccentric group of family and friends are: the endearing widower, Buck (Mark Walker); the cell phone addicted ex-wife, Rita (Joyce Renehan); his friend and a woman of faith Louise, (Monica Nadon); and his 16 year old daughter, Trisha (Cassandra Orrantia).
Remaining dates for this production are April 28 & 29 and May 5 & 6. Doors open at 7:15 with a showtime of 7:30 p.m. at Tehachapi Academy of Performing Arts, located at 47881 Valley Blvd. (between Tucker Rd. & Mountain View).
Advance tickets may be purchased at, The Apple Shed, Tehachapi Art Center, Java Cafe and Old Towne Nursery for $7 or $10 at the door (Seniors 62 and up and children 12 and under are always $7). Patron’s Passports maybe purchased at all TCT performances.
