At the Tehachapi City Council meeting on April 17, members voted to go forward on several projects, including work on the Tehachapi depot.
The city did approve funds to begin the bid process for reroofing the historic depot. The cost of a new roof is estimated to be approximately $40,000.
It was also decided that 2006 Farmers’ Market funds will be used for the project. The market is scheduled to begin the end of May and will be located at Railroad Park on Tehachapi Boulevard.
In addition, the council agreed on a proposal for a future city motocross complex and a Tehachapi aviation camp.
Assistant city manager, Greg Garrett, presented the city council with plans for a proposed motocross recreation complex on airport property. Currently, the only way motorcycle enthusiasts can ride in the area is on private property. Mayor Grimes said that Tehachapi currently has a skate park, bike paths, horse trails and it is time to look into a motocross complex.
City staff was given approval to begin looking into a possible complex on a 100-acre area located between the airport runway and the 58 freeway.
Airport manager, David Zweigle, presented a proposal for a youth aviation camp to be held June 26 through 30. The purpose of the camp will be promotion of aviation and airport safety to Tehachapi youth ages 7 through 14.
The week-long aviation day camp will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily and the registration fee will include lunch.
The Young Eagles Program of the Experimental Aircraft Association will offer free flights to the campers. Campers will build rockets and launch them on July 4.
Discussion also centered on a previous request for bids to begin restoration on the Beekay Theatre. Only one bid was submitted at a cost significantly higher than anticipated and the council voted to postpone the project until a later date.
“Builders are so busy right now, no one wants to do a remodel,” councilman Phil Smith said. “We can use fold-up chairs and folding tables for a couple more years.”
The city council meets on the first and third Monday of every month at 6 p.m. at the Kern County Veterans Hall, 125 E. F St. The public is invited to attend and encouraged to participate.
