Once in awhile a unique event comes along that is fun for the whole family, young and old. The Chick Racing Championships presented by Funds for Freedom was that event.
Yes, you read correctly, “chick racing,” little baby chicks racing down an 8-foot track making their trainers and owners proud. And don’t worry, plenty of rules were in place to protect our short-legged friends from harm. In fact, many of them were ready to take on the competition.
Easter Saturday brought young children and grumpy grandpas to race against each other for an afternoon of family fun. The event was hosted by the VFW Post 5948 and organized to raise money for the F3, Funds for Freedom, scholarship foundation, which will be given to a Tehachapi High School 2006 graduate.
Sixty-four owners carefully selected what looked to be the fastest furry fowl; each had one hour to befriend and train their little track stars. With names like Speedy, Luke Skywalker, Raider, Soft Tail and Erma places on the racing bracket, the action was ready to begin. Master of ceremonies Mike Heckathorn began calling racers to the track for exciting two by two sprint to the finish line.
Many different techniques were used to get the chicks down the track. The only rules were no mechanical devices and no touching the chick from start to finish.
While some of the little sprinters figured out there was food at the end of the track, others were more inclined to put on the brakes and look around questioning why they were there. Some would chase their owner’s hand and others were coaxed by the blowing of a straw to ruffle their backside. Although some of these races were more the endurance and patience of the owner, others were all out springs to the finish line. One race began too fast and close so the referee called for a rematch.
As each race eliminated the championship hopes of many furry competitors, there were only three to make the final podium. Third place went to Caroline Leipf and Christy Paino with “Charlie” doing the running. Second place went to Venessa Greer and her chick “Whitey.” Lastly, first place went to the fast-legged “Sawyer,” owned by Tom and Becky Palmer.
Congratulations to the winners and Funds for Freedom would like to thank everyone who came out for the fun. As everyone knows the real winner here was the F3 Scholarship Foundation.
