The 33rd annual Spring Art Show opens with a reception from 4 to 7 p.m. April 8, at the Oak Tree Country Club in Bear Valley Springs. Five of the participating artists have donated art that will be raffled at the opening reception the day of the event.

This week, Tehachapi News features artist Terry Sonntag:

In 2009, Terry Sonntag took up oil painting on a lark. A good friend, who was also a painter, recognized that Sonntag had what it takes to make a successful artist. Within three months, Sonntag had sold a painting of the picturesque Vasquez Rocks.

Sonntag lives near Vasquez Rocks, but travels all over the local paintable places that grace our beautiful mountain/desert area, which includes Tehachapi and Bear Valley Springs, where he is a part-time resident. His greatest painting adventures take place at the “Rocks,” as he calls them.

Although he is now retired, with the status of appraiser-emeritus, Sonntag was in the artistic arena for many years before learning to paint. He made a living as a certified-accredited appraiser of antiques and the decorative arts, which exposed him to the art of the California Impressionism movement. You’ll find the ghosts of this movement in his dramatic landscapes.

Sonntag became a member of the Santa Clarita Artists Association, California Art Club, The Pasadena Museum of California Art, and our own BVS Cultural Arts Association.

We at BVSCAA appreciate that Sonntag and his wife continue to go to the Vasquez Rocks to do plein air, or outdoor painting, a signature aspect of the Impressionist movements. Come to the BVSCAA Spring Art Show to meet Terry Sonntag and his wife, Linda, while enjoying appetizers and art.

The Spring Art Show will be open for viewing during the entire week. When the Oak Tree Country Club is open, the Art Show is open. Docents will be available to answer questions.

Raffle tickets will be sold up until the drawing the day of the event. During the opening reception, the public will be able to view all donated works, other pieces for sale and speak to the artists themselves.

Available at the reception will be hors d'oeuvres and wine. Admission will be $10 for adults, $5 for teenagers, and children under the age of 12 and members will be admitted free. Gate passes are available at the gate. For more information, call Linda at 330-7426 or Charlene at 821-2114.
