TVRPD announces classes, activities open to the public

Tehachapi Valley Recreation & Park District, located at 490 W. "D" St., offers the following classes and activities to the public:

Adult classes

* Zumba -- Zumba classes feature exotic rhythms set to high-energy Latin and international beats for dance fitness. Ages 13+, Mondays and Wednesdays, from 6 to 7 p.m., and Fridays, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., at the Monroe High School gymnasium. Cost is $40/month, $25/month for seniors or $7/class.

* Ballroom Dancing -- A combination of physical activity, social interaction and mental stimulation. Class is limited to 20 people, and fills up quickly. Six-week East Coast Swing class begins Monday, May 19. Beginners from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., intermediates from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., at the West Park Activity Center in the meeting room. Cost is $50 per person for six 1-hour classes.

Tehachapi Tots

* Parent & Me -- This class is an introduction to the Tehachapi Tots program. One parent and their child participate in activities together, including movement, music, storytelling and circle time. Dates are for Fall 2014 registration. Ages 18 months to 3 years, open enrollment through August 31, Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m., Scout Hall. Cost is $30 a month plus a one-time registration fee of $25.00

* Tot Enrichment -- Child attends without parent participating. A well-balanced enrichment program which includes exposure to pre-phonics, math, concepts, science, dramatics, motor movement, arts and crafts, music, and field trips. Children must be toilet trained. Bring a snack to all classes. Dates are for the Fall 2014 registration. Class is limited to 12 students. For ages 3 to 5 years, open enrollment through August 31, Mondays and Wednesdays, from 9 to 11:30 a.m., or Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Scout Hall. Cost is $75/month plus a one-time registration fee of $30.

Mad Science Summer Camps

* Fun-Gineering, Mix-Ups & More! -- A five-day camp to learn how to build, design and fix things. Ages 5 to 12 years, June 9 through 13, from 9 a.m. to noon, in Scout Hall. Cost is $170.

* Red Hot Rockets -- A five-day camp to learn the many uses of robots. Ages 8 to 12 years, June 9 through 13, from 1 to 4 p.m., in Scout Hall. Cost is $180.

* NASA Camp: Journey into Outer Space -- A five-day camp to study space phenomena while working in a model space station like a real astronaut. Ages 7 to 12 years, June 23 through 27, from 1 to 4 p.m., in Scout Hall. Cost is $170.

* Eureka! The Inventor's Camp -- Campers will spend their week overcoming a series of challenges using basic materials, simple machines and tips from famous inventors. Ages 5 to 12 years, June 23 through 27, from 9 a.m. to noon, Scout Hall. Cost is $170.

* Crazy Chemworks! -- Campers will learn to swirl, pour and mix like a scientist. Ages 4 to 8 years, August 4 through 8, from 9 a.m. to noon, Scout Hall. Cost is $170.

* Secret Agent Lab -- Investigate a pretend crime scene and decode secret messages. Ages 7 to 12 years, August 4 through 8, from 1 to 4 p.m., Scout Hall. Cost is $170.

LEGO Camps

* Engineering FUNdamentals -- Power up your engineering skills with Play-Well TeKnologies and tens of thousands of LEGOs. Ages 8 to 12, grades 2 through 5, June 16 through 20, from 1 to 4 p.m., Scout Hall. Cost is $140.

* Pre-Engineering -- Build engineer-designed projects such as boats, bridges, mazes, motorized cars and more. Ages 5 to 7 years, grades K through 2, June 16 through 20, 9 a.m. to noon, Scout Hall. Cost is $140.

* Jedi Engineering -- Defeat the Empire by designing and refining Lego X-Wings, R2-units, and settlements on far-flung edges of the galaxy. Ages 5 to 7 years, grades K through 2, July 7 through 11, 9 a.m. to noon, Scout Hall. Cost is $140.

* Jedi Master Engineering -- Build complex machines and structures based on the best designs from the galaxy far, far away. Reinforce key engineering concepts such as gear trains, worm drives, pneumatics, eccentric motion and more. Ages 7 to 12 years, grades 2 through 5, July 7 through 11, 1 to 4 p.m., Scout Hall. Cost is $140.

* Super Hero Engineering -- Build hideouts and vehicles of your favorite caped crusaders and learn what makes them not only Super Heroes, but Super Hero Engineers. Ages 5 to 7, grades K through 2, July 28 through Aug. 1, 9 a.m. to noon, Scout Hall. Cost is $140.

* Robotics Using LEGO Mindstorms -- Build and program robots using the LEGO Minstorms system. Learn about mechanical and software design, loops, conditional statements, problem solving and teamwork skills. Ages 9 plus, grades 4 plus, July 28 through Aug. 1, 1 to 4 p.m., Scout Hall. Cost is $160.

Pool Programs

* Lap Swim -- Enjoy the 6-line 25 years pool. Monthly passes must be purchased at TVRPD District Office. Lap hours are subject to change. Ages 13 plus, unless accompanied by an adult, Monday through Friday, from 5 to 7 a.m., and 7:15 to 8:15 p.m., Dye Natatorium. Cost is $50/unlimited monthly pass, $40/unlimited senior monthly pass, and $5/drop in.

* Marti's Water Aerobics -- A low-impact workout to upbeat music. Monthly passes must be purchased at TVRPD District Office. Ages 16 plus, Mondays and Wednesdays, from 7:15 to 8:15 p.m., Dye Natatorium, $30/month or $5/drop in.

* Deep Water Aerobics -- A 50 to 60 minute workout for all fitness levels. Ages 16 plus, Mondays and Wednesdays, from 7:15 to 8:15 p.m., Dye Natatorium, $40 month.

* Aqua Zumba -- A low-impact aquatic exercise to the Zumba program. Ages 16 plus, Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 7:15 to 8:15 p.m., Dye Natatorium, $40 month.

Pool rental is also available for private pool parties.
