Tompkins students participate in Battle of the Books

On May 9, five 4th and 5th grade students represented Tompkins Elementary School in the Kern County Battle of the Books. Local students included Abbie Jaster, Sydney Russell, Juliana Magdalena, Cesar Cardenas and Emma Burdick.

Over 400 students from Kern County participated in a total of 60 teams, and "battled" for the high score.

Burdick, Jaster and Russell received finalist medals. All five students from Tompkins read at least 20 out of 30 books on a predetermined list. The books included such titles as "The Island of the Blue Dolphins," by Scott O'Dell, and "The Hobbit," by J.R.R. Tolkien. These students demonstrated an extremely high level of commitment and determination by reading books that were not a part of their regular schoolwork.

The Battle of the Books is sponsored by the Kern Reading Association and Kern County Superintendent of Schools.
