Beekay will be busy during holiday season
Three holiday productions are jammed into the Beekay Theatre this season, beginning with a lavish, fully-staged production of "A Christmas Carol" opening Nov. 16, for 10 performances, a special solo candlelight performance of "A Christmas Carol" by Alex Zonn on Dec. 21 and a fun puppet show, "Dude, Where's My Sleigh?" on Dec. 22.
Tehachapi Community Theatre's spectacular full production of "A Christmas Carol" is nearing completion under director Jonathan Hall, with a brand new adaptation by Alex Zonn, Tehachapi's resident Scrooge. Performances begin Nov. 16, running through Thanksgiving weekend and into the first week of December at the Beekay Theatre, located at 110 S. Green St.
Tickets are now available online and at Johnny's Take n' Bake Pizza, Tehachapi Furniture in Old Town and Picture Perfect downtown. Online purchases can be made at www.tctonstage.com. Highest demand for seats will be Thanksgiving weekend when locals bring their families and guests for a holiday treat Friday and Saturday night, as well as a Sunday matinee. A complete performance schedule is available online at www.tctonstage.com.
Hall's telling of the tale of redemption features special effects, a bit of flight, a magic disappearance and many other fanciful elements. Among the cast of 24 are Zonn as Scrooge, David Shacklock as Marley, Brett Lawrence as Bob Cratchit and Heather Ringle as Mrs. Cratchit. Two added characters are played by Casey Brocklesby and Katie Jones, who form a sort of chorus to echo and support the ghostly figures as they appear. The also manipulate the 10-foot tall puppet of the ominous Ghost of Christmas Future.
Chosen to celebrate the Charles Dickens bicentennial, this is group's second full cast staging of the tale, both featuring Zonn as Scrooge.
Over the past four years, Zonn has performed his one-man Candlelight Performance of "Christmas Carol," and this year will be no exception, with one solo performance on Friday, Dec. 21, at 7 p.m. All seats for the Candlelight Christmas Carol are $10.
Fun for the kids
Saturday, Dec. 22, completes the holiday trio with professional puppeteer Don Kruszka's production of "Dude, Where's My Sleigh?" Especially brought in to entertain younger children, "Sleigh" will be performed at 1 p.m. and again at 4 p.m. and is targeted at ages three and up.
Kruszka is a master of performing for children and he knows just how to push the right buttons for getting them involved and participating, getting them quiet when he wants, and singing along with the show's characters. The show is based on Comet having lost Santa's sleigh, and seeking help from Jack Frost and other "North Pole inhabitants." All seats for "Sleigh" are $6.
