A Kern County judge set bail at $1 million Monday for a Tehachapi man accused of killing his girlfriend's 4-month-old son.

At the request of a public defender, the arraignment of Daniel McKie, 19, was postponed to March 20 to make sure the office has no conflict in representing him.

Judge Colette M. Humphrey granted the postponement after McKie agreed to wait until next week to be formally arraigned.

McKie gave a loud sob before the hearing began. He wore paper clothing, an indication he's on suicide watch.

McKie is charged with murder in the death of Anakin William McKie, who died Feb. 26 of blunt injuries to the head at his home in the 12900 block of Umtali Road.

Deputies were dispatched that day to a report that the child was not breathing in the Sand Canyon area, sheriff's officials said. Medical help arrived, but the boy was pronounced dead.

Homicide detectives took over the investigation "due to suspicious injuries" on the child, according to sheriff's officials.

Daniel McKie was arrested on Thursday. He is not the biological father of Anakin, but they share the same last name.

"After completing numerous interviews and based on the evidence located, detectives developed probable cause to arrest Daniel McKie, the boyfriend of Anakin' s mother, for murder," a sheriff's news release said.
