House fire kills at least four pets
Firefighters believe a floor furnace started a fire that killed at least four family pets Wednesday evening.
According to a press release from the Kern County Fire Dept., no one was at home at a house in the 500 block of E. "F" Street when a fire broke out. The fire call came in just before 9 p.m. on Feb. 1. Twelve firefighters responded to the incident.
The name of the family living in the house was not released. According to the fire department, three people were living in the house and 12 animals were reported to have been in the house, but no one was at home when the fire started.
Three dogs and one cat reportedly died in the fire with the other eight animals unaccounted for at the time of the press release at 10:21 p.m. Wednesday.
Upon arrival, fire crews were faced with a fire burning in the floor of the home that had started near a floor furnace. The blaze was contained in just under 20 minutes.
There were no reported injuries and damages are estimated at $30,0000. Firefighters were able to save $90,000 worth of property. The cause of the fire is under investigation but is likely to have started in the floor furnace.
The Kern County Fire Department would like to remind the community to check, clean, and service their furnaces regularly.
