Guns used in Mojave shooting located

A firearm that was used Jan. 8 in a shooting in Mojave -- prior to the suspects leading law enforcement on a high speed chase that ended in Bakersfield -- has been recovered.

Just after 3 p.m. on Jan. 8, Kern County Sheriff's deputies received a radio call of a possible shooting that had just occurred at the Motel 6 in Mojave.

The suspects were later located and pursuit of their vehicle ended in East Bakersfield, but the firearm used in the shooting had not been recovered. A motorist, who saw the initiation of the pursuit on Highway 58 in North Edwards, witnessed the suspects throw a dark color object from the passenger window onto the shoulder of the highway. The motorist later called the KCSO and reported what they had seen.

Deputies from the Mojave Substation went to the area described by the motorist. After a brief search, deputies located and seized a semi-automatic handgun including one handgun magazine from the side of the roadway. During the subsequent investigation, information developed that a second firearm was used in the shooting. Believing the second firearm was also discarded by the suspects in the same area, a more extensive search of the area was conducted. With assistance from the Sheriff's Office Desert Search and Rescue Team, personnel from the unit located the second firearm.

On Jan. 8, it was reported that numerous gun shots were heard coming from the motel. While deputies were enroute to the scene, additional callers advised that two vehicles were seen fleeing the motel. One vehicle was described as a black full size pick-up truck and the second vehicle was described as a black color Ford Mustang.

Deputies arrived on scene and were directed to the black pick-up truck which was parked in the Stater Brother's grocery store parking lot across the street from the Motel 6. Deputies at that location found an adult male suffering from a single gunshot wound to the abdomen.

Information obtained at the scene led to the description of the suspect's vehicle which fled the area. A deputy traveling westbound on Highway 58 in the North Edwards area spotted the suspect vehicle traveling eastbound on the highway. The deputy made a U-turn and attempted to catch-up to the suspect vehicle.

The suspect vehicle exited the highway and re-entered the highway traveling westbound. The deputy attempted to over-take the suspect vehicle and a vehicle pursuit ensued that traveled approximately 80 miles along Highway 58 into the Bakersfield area. Where Deputies arrested two people in the vehicle, one male adult, 22, and a 16-year-old male.

The investigation into the shooting is still on-going.
