New police station proposed
The Tehachapi Police Department was expected to propose a new location for the police department at last night's City Council meeting.
Earlier it was determined that the current police station is inadequate for a modern public safety facility and with council's approval staff began to look for a new location for the facility. Based on the information developed they recommended the purchase and remodel of an existing structure at 220 W. C Street. The price of the building is pegged at $400,000.
The building is currently vacant. It was built in the 1950s and once housed Spencer California, a children's wear factory.
Staff requested the purchase of the building and authorization to issue a request for qualifications for an architect with experience in designing police facilities.
Funding is expected to come from the city's Public Safety Impact Fee fund, with a reported balance of $660,000.
The meeting took place Monday night after the deadline for this edition. The council's action will be reported next week. One photo -- Police building Photo by Ed Gordon
This empty building on C Street just west of Curry, once the home of a children's wear factory, has been proposed as a new location for the Tehachapi Police Dept.
