Tulare Union was able to gut out three super-tiebreaker wins last Thursday afternoon in the CIF Division II quarterfinals, but in the end, Tehachapi's will was too strong in an eventual 5-4 win.

The victory was the second time Tehachapi (16-9) defeated the Redskins in the playoffs. Last season in the first round, Tehachapi defeated Tulare Union 8-1.

"(Tulare) was really improved from last year. They were a good team," said head coach Amy Lang. "It was a competitive match and it went right down to the wire."

The match was tied at 3-3 after singles play, with Darian Grisso (6-1, 6-3), Alexis Schoenberg (7-5, 7-5) and Brooke Neufeld (6-2, 6-1) taking match wins for Mountain Tennis.

In doubles, Shelby Newman and Carrie Brewer won in third doubles 6-1, 6-0, with the final deciding match point coming from singles winners Grisso and Schoenberg, who breezed to a 6-2, 6-3 victory at first doubles.

"Darian and Alexis really had a great afternoon in singles and the deciding match in doubles," added Lang. "Alexis really fought hard in singles to win, and that ended up being a very important match for us. They both played well."

Earlier in the week, Tehachapi defeated the no.13 seed, Frontier, 9-0.

Grisso (6-1, 6-1), Ashley Rush (6-3, 2-6, 10-4), Lexi Zimmerman (7-5, 6-3), Schoenberg (1-6, 6-1, 10-3), Sarah Jensen (6-3, 6-3), Brooke Neufeld (6-3, 6-2) were victorious in singles and Rush-Zimmerman (8-1), Grisso-Schoenberg (8-1) and Newman-Brewer (8-2) won in doubles.

Up next for the Lady Warriors is a playoff rematch against no.1 seed Sanger. The winner will play in the CIF championship next week.

"We played Sanger in the playoffs last season and have seen them already this year in the Clovis (Tournament)," Lang said. "The familiarity is there and that helps us going in. We'll be competitive."

Lady Warriors compete in Southern Area Tourney

While the team playoffs are in full swing, a handful of Mountain Tennis players participated in the Southern Area Individual Tournament at Wasco this past weekend.

Darian Grisso received the no.6 seed in singles, while Alexis Schoenberg also represented Tehachapi in singles. Ashley Rush and Lexi Zimmerman were Lady Warrior representatives in doubles.

Full results of the Southern Area Tournament will be available next week.
