School District honors Employees of the Year at special dinner

The Tehachapi Unified School District's Employees of the Year for 2014 were honored at a special dinner held May 8, in the cafeteria of Jacobsen Middle School.

Every school site nominated a certificated and classified employee to represent their site. This year the site honorees were:

Tehachapi High School: Amy Watkins, social studies teacher, and Matthew Sterk, truancy officer.

Monroe High School: Karen Wolfe, teacher, and Karen McCormick, principal's secretary.

Jacobsen Middle School: Darcy Hubbard, 7th grade science teacher, and Martha Strauss, vice principal's secretary.

Cummings Valley Elementary School: Wendy Murray, 2nd and 3rd grade combination teacher, and Pam Johnson, principal's secretary.

Golden Hills Elementary School: Donna Sokanoff, 5th grade teacher, and Mary Landon, principal's secretary.

Tompkins Elementary School: Leslie Carrasco, kindergarten teacher, and Bobi McKenzie, intervention specialist.

Maintenance and Operations: George Wright, skilled maintenance.

Transportation: Jennifer Jones, bus driver.

District Office: Terry Leman, technology technician.

Regarding JMS Teacher of the Year Darcy Hubbard, Principal Paul Kaminiski writes, "Darcy Hubbard has been happily teaching 7th grade science at Jacobsen for 18 years. Even though she has had opportunities to teach biology at the high school and at Valley Oaks, she chose to stay at Jacobsen because she LOVES seventh graders and her Jacobsen FAMILY. She loves middle schooler's goofy humor, emerging independence, curiosity, and daily personality changes. She loves the professionalism, dedication, humor, support, and camaraderie of the Jacobsen staff."

"Mary Landon has worked in the Tehachapi Unified School District as a principal's secretary for 20 years," writes Julie Croy, Interim Principal at Golden Hills. Mary has been an incredible and dedicated employee who is always organized and professional. She has helped plan and organize 12 THS graduations, four JMS promotions and two kindergarten promotions. She has worked with approximately 5,500 students and has been an incredible asset to 15 different principals. Mary is a generous person that always makes sure that the staff and students are well taken care of."

TUSD also said thank you to a number of individuals and organizations for their generous donations throughout the year. These included Eaton Concrete, Cali Painting, Tompkins Elementary PTO, Cummings Valley Elementary PTO, Jacobsen Middle School PTO, Tehachapi High School PTO, Mountain Gardens Nursery and Jackie Wood Photography.
