The Tractor Supply Company store located on North Mill Street is holding a grand opening on Saturday, March 29, complete with specially-priced goods and giveaways to help celebrate the new store.

A ribbon cutting ceremony with the Greater Tehachapi Chamber of Commerce will commence at 10:30 a.m.

Also present will be members from the Tehachapi Mountain Rodeo Association, a Dodge truck vendor, two local animal rescue groups, including Have A Heart Humane Society, along with animal exhibits with clydesdales, goats, alpacas and more.

Two 4-H clubs will also be present, hosting a bake sale, displaying poultry, and selling hot dogs.

From March 27 through March 30, the 19,000 square foot retail farm and ranch store will give shoppers 10 percent off of their first purchase, up to $100, according to a release from the company.

Customers will also have chances to win prizes, including gift cards, feed, tools, and other items. Free Tractor Supply caps will also be given out.

The store provides a wide selection of gardening equipment, workwear, animal feed and pet supplies, welding equipment, power tools, as well as truck and trailer products.

You won't be able to purchase any John Deere tractors, but tractor implements, hitch parts, oil filters, and more will be avaiable at the store.

According to the Tractor Supply Company's website, the company is headquartered in Brentwood, Tenn., and operates more than 1,200 retail stores across the country.

Tractor Supply will employ 13 people, all who are local, Store Manager Tom Scott said. He noted that the positions are already filled, but the company will continue to accept applications to keep a pool of prospective employees.

Tom Scott was the store manager for the Bakersfield location for four years and said many Tehachapi residents who used to have to make the trip down the mountain for supplies are excited about the store's new location.

Part of that excitement, he said, may be a result of how the store treats its shoppers.

"We pride ourselves on old-fashioned customer service," the kind that has a bit more of a "personal touch," Scott said.

Scott said one of the store's best selling items in Bakersfield was dog food, which he credits to competive prices.

Tractor Supply is the largest retails farm and ranch supply store chain in the United States, according to the company.

Sobel Development, a land development company based in Beverly Hills, owns the property that houses the store. The company has owned the land since 2006 and leased it to the retail store last May.

Sobel Development also owns the Orchard Shopping Center on Tucker Road.

"We've been working with them for the better part of 10 years," City Manager Greg Garrett said. "We appreciate what they do and how they do it."

Along with the development came construction of a new median and turn lane on North Mill Street in front of the store.
