Cal City man pleads not guilty to murder of toddler

A California City man charged with the murder of two-year-old Pharaoh Van Vactor pleaded not guilty to one count of first-degree murder and one count of assault of a child under eight resulting in death, at his arraignment on Monday, Dec. 2 at the Kern County Superior Court in Bakersfield.

Multiple bailiffs escorted Carol Roberson, grandmother of Van Vactor, out of the courtroom after she erupted and began cursing at Berry in the middle of the arraignment.

Mathew Berry, 26, waived his right to a speedy trial.

Judge Michael B. Lewis scheduled a pre-preliminary hearing for Feb. 10, 2014, and a preliminary hearing for Feb. 11.

Berry is being held without bail.
