Tehachapi Valley Healthcare District Chief Executive Officer Alan Burgess has retired according to a statement issued this afternoon by the chairman of the Board of Directors of the district.

"The district thanks Mr. Burgess for his six years of service and leadership to the district," said Dr. Sam Conklin, board president. "In addition to overseeing operations at Tehachapi Hospital and the district's clinics, Mr. Burgess has played an integral role in leading the new hospital project. We are grateful for all his service and proud of his accomplishments that have done so much to enhance our community."

Conklin added that everyone at the district wishes "Mr. Burgess and his family the very best as they enjoy a long and happy retirement."

Hospital Compliance Officer Judy Adamson said Burgess notified the hospital staff via an email Thursday night, stating that his resignation was effective immediately.

"He is retiring for health reasons," Adamson said.

The notice comes amid the hospital board's CEO performance review. The evaluation has been conducted in closed session at the August and September regular board meetings, with no details disclosed thus far.

Performance reviews are standard practice for public employees. Conklin had little to say about the timing.

"We're always trying to get people to do their best," he said.

Conklin said he is confident construction on the new hospital will proceed without interruption by Burgess' sudden exit.

"The new hospital construction will go on," Conklin said. "We have a super prime group that is [managing the project]."
