California Highway Patrol Officer Steve Nielsen reports that a single-car crash on Highway 14 near Ridgecrest on Thursday, July 18 resulted in two deaths and three injuries.
Around 4:07 p.m., a Ford F250 carrying five passengers was headed northbound on Highway 14 when it ran off the east shoulder of the road and overturned, Nielsen said. The accident occurred just north of Red Rock Canyon State Park and involved only the truck.
The crash caused multiple ejections from the vehicle, according to Nielsen. Two people were pronounced dead at the scene, two others were airlifted and one was taken by ambulance to the hospital. Nielsen could not provide details on the identities of the people or the location of the hospital, but he said preliminary reports suggest the driver was one of the fatalities.
Those who were airlifted were listed in critical condition at the time of the accident, while the person transported by ground ambulance was "alert" at the time, Nielsen said.
Officials do not yet know the reason for the accident.
