School board to address layoffs

Due to budgetary shortfalls, the Board of Trustees of  Tehachapi Unified School District may eliminate two elementary teacher positions at its meeting tonight.

The fate of those teachers will be decided at a special meeting of the Board of Trustees tomorrow night at 5 p.m. at the Claude L. Wells Education Center located at 300 South Robinson St.

While March 15 marks the preliminary deadline set by the Education Code for notifying teachers, counselors and other credentialed employees of possible layoffs, districts have until May15 to make official layoff decisions.

And while many teachers who receive notices are often later rehired, it is not clear what direction the district will take regarding the two positions it’s seeking to eliminate.

District Superintendent Lisa Gilbert said she can't comment on the exact positions or schools that would be affected.

On Tuesday night, the board will discuss and take action on a resolution reducing or eliminating certain certificated services.

The draft resolution shows that cuts are justified because of insufficient revenues needed to maintain the current level of programs and necessary program changes. If approved by the board Gilbert will be directed to determine which employees are to receive notice of possible layoffs as a result of the service reduction/elimination.

On a more positive note — the number of teachers receiving layoff notices this year has declined dramatically — so far.
