Work began Tuesday morning to restore water damage to the mural "Air Mail" on Hitching Post Theaters. The restoration, which is expected to be complete by the end of the week, is being done by local artist and veteran muralist Lyn Bennett.
"I had to patch a section, and when that dries I'll start matching colors and touch up the rest of it," said Bennett.
According to Bennett, one of the things that seems to be contributing to the decay is the wooden railing that makes up the top boarder of the mural.
"It is trapping the water up there and it's getting under the paint and causing it to bubble," she said. "Hopefully we can talk to the building owner and have something done about it."
"Air Mail" was painted in 2007 by Mark Pestana and depicts Tehachapi airmail pilot Harry Beauford standing next to his plane at the Tehachapi Airport, which was then known as Kern County Airport Number 4. The mural's placement on Hitching Post Theaters commemorates how the building once housed the Tehachapi Post Office.
