Another new retailer is expected to move in to Tehachapi by spring. According to Brad Sobel, of Sobel Development Company, Tractor Supply Company signed a lease with the developer in May for space on the lot on North Mill Street across from Home Depot.
"We really love this city," Sobel said. "We're trying to bring in more businesses and bring in more jobs...New businesses create jobs and construction creates jobs."
Sobel Development owns the Orchard Shopping Center, where businesses including Big 5 Sporting Goods and Del Taco are located on Tucker Road.
Community Development Director David James said last week that the city is close to issuing a construction permit to Sobel, while Sobel said he expects construction to begin within the next two weeks.
Sobel Development has owned the property since 2006. Previously, a flooring company occupied the lot, but the building had been vacant for some time. In just the last few weeks, the building was bulldozed and workers have begun leveling the ground.
A "for lease" sign is posted with Sobel Development's contact information because, according to Sobel, the one-acre lot has enough space for another business to move in.
Sobel said he has a good working relationship with city staff and is working closely with them through the process.
"We're very excited to bring Tractor Supply to Tehachapi," Sobel said. "They have a great breadth of products. The people I've spoken to are very excited to have Tractor Supply come to Tehachapi, as well."
