Ending his 23 years of service to the Tehachapi Valley Healthcare District, Dr. Gary Olsen announced his resignation from the board of directors on Wednesday, Oct. 16.

Olsen said he plans to move to Utah to be with his children and grandchildren. His resignation will be effective the end of October.

Two years ago, he retired from his career as a family practitioner and general surgeon.

"They promised me a new hospital in five years," he said. "And that was when I moved here 24 years ago."

As a seven-year board member, Olsen has seen the district go through many changes, perhaps the most significant being the groundbreaking for the new hospital he was promised so long ago.

"It's been an interesting time," Olsen said slyly. "I'm going to miss the community."

"He will be missed," board chairman Dr. Sam Conklin said. "So we're glad to show our appreciation to Dr. Olsen."

The audience stood and applauded the retiring doctor after the director's comment.

The district is currently seeking applicants to fill the vacancy. According to the notice, the deadline for the district to receive letters of interest is Nov. 16, at 5 p.m. Letters can be mailed to: Tehachapi Valley Healthcare District, ATTN: Peggy Mendiburu, 115 W. "E" St., Tehachapi.

The board is expected to make an appointment to the position at its Nov. 20 meeting.
