Matthew Berry, 26-year-old of California City, who was arrested and charged with the first-degree murder of two-year-old Pharaoh Vanvactor, will be arraigned at 3 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 25, at the Kern County Superior Court in Bakersfield.

Berry has also been charged with assault on a child causing death.

According to the coroner, the child's death was the result of blunt force trauma.

Vanvactor was in the custody of Berry during the morning of Wednesday, Nov. 20, when a Kern Regional Transit bus driver traveling the Ridgecrest-Mojave route saw them standing on the side of the road about 10 miles outside the city limits of California City and asked Berry if assistance was needed.

"Sometime after the man and child boarded the bus, the man informed the driver that there was a medical issue with the child," stated Sheriff's Department Spokesman Ray Pruitt. "After that, the driver called for the fire department and an ambulance to meet him in California City."

It was approximately 7:26 a.m. when California City Police Department responded to a call at the corner of California City Boulevard and Neuralia Road. Responding medical aid pronounced the child was dead on the scene.

Berry is the live-in boyfriend of Vanvactor’s mother.
