Jon Curry was officially named Public Works Director for the City of Tehachapi on March 17. Curry served as the interim Public Works Director since last October, after Dennis Wahlstrom retired from his position after serving the city for 20 years.
The new department head has worked for the city since 2008, when he was first hired as Utility Manager. His background has been focused on the water and wasterwater realm of public works, he said. Curry began doing water quality projects in 1988 for the Navy, before diving into various public works positions in Bakersfield and the Golden Hills Community Services District.
"Mr. Curry was involved in the research and development of a groundbreaking arsenic removal system for small water agencies and conducted training for industrial professionals on the federal, state, and local levels," said City Manager Greg Garrett in a news release.
Curry said he has also taught municipal courses through the Californian Rural Water Association.
As Public Works Director his responsibilities include maintaining the city's assets -- including roads, water and sewer -- and monitoring internal projects, as well as coordinating with the engineering department.
"Jon has done an excellent job as the interim Public Works Director in its new capacity and I am excited about how his skills and expertise will allow us to continue our positive momentum throughout the organization," Garrett said.
