This is the third year for the contest and more local businesses and organizations than ever.

Businesses and organizations were nominated and voting took place using the Best of Tehachapi website (www.bestoftehachapi.com). Finalists and winners will be featured on that website as well, and winners will be published in the 2013 TOP phone book.

More than 265 individuals, businesses and organizations were nominees, some in multiple categories, this year. BEST FAMILY ATTRACTION

Tehachapi Farmers’ Market
Main Street Tehachapi's Farmers’ Market has moved around over the years. It has grown and evolved. This year's Farmers’ Market moved to Railroad Park on Tehachapi Boulevard which meant everything about the market had to be revisited. What exactly was important to our Farmers’ Market? It is always difficult to take an event that has grown and move it to a smaller place unable to accommodate that growth. Priorities were set. We recognized exactly what a Farmers’ Market is. We wanted the atmosphere to have shade with grass instead of hot concrete and blaring sun; a place where the community could come together and enjoy the breeze and trees. In most communities Farmers’ Markets are a place to buy fresh, wholesome farm-fresh produce brought in by local area farmers. Farmers’ Markets generally offer a variety of vendors with agriculturally related products like flowers, nuts, olives, breads, oils, goat milk soaps, etc. this community loves having local musicians for entertainment and RR Park has a fantastic central stage which makes this possible. And, if you are going to sit down and enjoy some music, you might was well enjoy something good to eat with a refreshing drink. We have a great community of artisans in Tehachapi, so offering some handmade and made in America jewelry and crafts is fitting of offer. So that is what we offer at our Farmer’s Market. Being nominated for the Best Family Attraction validates those decisions. Thank you, we are glad we made the right decisions. Main Street Tehachapi • www.MainStreetTehachapi.org

Fourth of July Fireworks, sponsored by the City of Tehachapi
There is no doubt that Tehachapi is a patriotic town and the City of Tehachapi’s nomination for Best Family Attraction is an extension of that sentiment. Our annual Fourth of July fireworks display draws thousands out to enjoy the sights and sounds of freedom each year is a valued tradition that will continue for years to come. The fireworks are just part of Tehachapi’s July 4 celebration, with the popular Hot Dog Festival in Central Park, kiddie parade downtown sponsored by Tehachapi Parks and Recreation, T-pops concert at Coy Burnett Stadium and bullriding sponsored by the Tehachapi Mountain Rodeo Association rounding out a great day of traditional family fun. BEST COMMUNITY ORGANIZATION

Main Street Tehachapi
Main Street Tehachapi offers a year-round array of diverse events that have become a staple for the community. Locals and out of town visitors alike love the Chili Cookoff, including kids, because of the games, bounce houses, petting zoo and face painting. It’s a thrill to hear guests say, “guess what, Main Street is having a Wine Walk Downtown this Saturday (occurring twice a year) that we should go to.” Or “How about going to the fun day on Tehachapi Blvd. during the Oktoberfest” or the stroll around downtown to look at the murals. What kid doesn't love Halloween, seeing friends and costumes, making Trunk or Treat more popular every year? And, of course, many people enjoy an excuse to get dressed up and go out on the town at the Starlight Ball. But we can’t overlook how great it is to have the community come together for Farmers Market for 10 weeks each summer. Our mission is to revitalize Historical Downtown Tehachapi, to improve economic growth and help the community, and visitors, discover the area. We've been involved in design aspects of Downtown including Rail Road Park, the painting of the Water Tower, murals and Centennial Plaza. We've made suggestions for street lighting and many other improvements that the City of Tehachapi has implemented. Main Street has helped many businesses refresh their buildings too. This is our community and Main Street is an organization that helps to keep pride in the heart of our city. 822-6519 • www.MainStreetTehachapi.org

Feed My Sheep
Rick begins with a hearty, "This is the day the Lord has made!" at each gathering. "We will rejoice and be glad in it," a cheerful response from the crowd comes. Following a short reading of scripture and a prayer the guests gather around large tables and share a meal, family style, at Feed My Sheep. In cooperation with the Salvation Army Fresh Rescue Program, Feed My Sheep serves a full breakfast to 50 to 80 guests five days a week and dinner on Wednesday evenings. The folks gathered include fixed-income seniors, single moms and their kids, disabled, homeless, unemployed and the underemployed. As of June 2010 Feed My Sheep had served over 43,000 meals without any fundraising programs. The ministry relies on support from the body of believers from many local churches who generously give their time, money and prayers as they discover that a simple meal can help overcome a multitude of social and economic barriers for community members. We have a diverse gathering of people who grow into a family who genuinely care for one another. It is not about the 43,000 plates of food. It is about the 43,000 smiles, 43,000 hands on shoulders, 43,000 moments of fellowship and 43,000 opportunities to share the love of Jesus as He gathers His flock. Feed My Sheep’s mission is simple: "To prove to the world that God is alive and that He is to be trusted." If you are hungry or would like to help call Rick. 661-492-1632 • www.churchoftehachapi.ning.com

PALS (Patronize A Local Shop)
Formed in January 2012 by Susie Atherton, Marilyn Beardslee and Katherine DeLap, PALS (Patronize A Local Shop) is a grassroots effort to support Tehachapi’s local businesses. Without financial backing, PALS relies on its Facebook page, as well as a few of its friends, such as The Loop newspaper, Slick Fish Marketing and Prime Signs, to promote the new venture. The efforts have been well received and enthusiastically supported by the Tehachapi community. Each month, three businesses are selected, one each from downtown, Tucker Town and Old Town. A brightly colored banner is erected, drawings are held for prizes, and Tehachapi’s small businesses are actively promoted with photos and stories on Facebook and in the newspapers. PALS offers its heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the residents and businesses that have supported these activities over the last year. And thank you to this community for nominating PALS as a Best Community Organization. When a community like Tehacahapi bands together, really good things happen. www.facebook.com/PALSofTehachapi

BEST ANIMAL RESCUE

Marley’s Mutts
Three and a half years ago we started Marley’s Mutts Dog Rescue in Tehachapi. Our goal was to help stray, abandoned, injured, hard up dogs by bringing them off the streets, out of the shelter and into our homes. That is one of the traits that makes Marley’s Mutts unique. We believe that rescued dogs, especially big dogs (which are inherently more dangerous), need be evaluated, treated and rehabilitated, not taken from one cage at the shelter and placed in another. Implementing such a program has taken a lot of work and progress through trial and error, but we have created a “pack environment” where rescued dogs live amongst each other in harmony and are retaught the basics of “a dog’s life.” Most of our dogs come from the shelter, where they are in gravest danger of being euthanized but many come from folks like you, or strays from the hospital — really,  from all over. They come here — or to one of our capable foster homes in this community — and are rehabilitated, loved and allowed to learn to be dogs again. Dogs that we rescue come to live up here as if they were at camp — we have structure, rules, lots of exercise and we learn routine. This type of environment is extremely conducive to emotional, mental and physical restoration and rehabilitation. With your support and urging we have adopted out over 500 dogs to loving, capable homes. Our commitment doesn’t begin and end with rescue, but continues in the classroom. We’ve spoken about animal rescue and welfare at every school in our community with the intent of passing on our knowledge to the kids as well as encouraging them to be of service. Our rescue and this community are intertwined and our scope and capability has increased because of your support. Your support means the world to us and we are very grateful to be mentioned as one of this community’s best. Zach Skow, Marley’s Mutts • www.marleysmutts.com

Save Tehachapi’s Orphaned Pets (STOP)
Once again, the wonderful Tehachapi community has nominated Save Tehachapi’s Orphaned Pets (STOP) in the poll, “2012 Best of Tehachapi”.  Thank you for recognizing us and know that since 2008, we have successfully rescued 800 dogs and cats who are now enjoying their second chance at life in their forever loving homes. As a non-profit organization, STOP depends on your generous donations, volunteers’ time, and foster families, all of which are priceless.  STOP is dedicated to the continued rescue of countless dogs and cats who have no voice, are abused, abandoned, neglected, homeless, from high-kill shelters.  Help us be the change you want to see now and in the future — it is impossible to thank all our dedicated supporters, however, the following deserve to be recognized: Adoptees, Canine Creek, Debi Hartman (“Sparks”), Dedicated Board Members, Foster Family Homes, Katy Jacobson, Photographer, Local Groomers, Mountain Antiques, Nevills Corp., Souza Family Vineyard, Tehachapi Automotive, Tehachapi Veterinary Hospital, The Loop, The Tehachapi News Weekender, Tri/County R.E. and Volunteers. www.thestoppers.org • 823-4100 (#2, dogs; #3, cats)

Tehachapi Humane Society
Established in 1993, we are a community minded organization with animals in the Tehachapi area in mind. In these difficult times, we feel companion animals are very important for family life. We provide food for the animals when things get tight. Our original purpose was to have animals spayed and neutered, so we provide vouchers to help defray the costs. We began rescuing when the community asked us to provide this service. Animals are fostered in homes until adopted, spayed or neutered, brought current on shots and micro-chipped before they go to their new homes. We provide educational materials, as well. One of our programs is for feral cats. People like to have them for rodent control; we will help trap them, pay part of the cost of spay/neuter and then return the cats to their colony. We also offer a monthly shot clinic and lost and found networking to help reunite pets and families. We can always use volunteers for our programs. Tehachapi Humane Society • www.tehachapihumane.org

Souza Family Vineyard
Bob and Patty Souza established Souza Family Vineyard at 26877 Cummings Valley Road in 2008. The Souzas were transplants from the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles, having moved to Tehachapi in 1990, leaving the business world as insurance brokers to find a simpler life. Bob and Patty purchased the Elijah Stowell Estate, an 1888 Victorian home and barns on 60 acres overlooking the valley. After years of hard work, the industrious Souzas beautifully restored the lovely historic property which they call the Souza Ranch. The ranch and gardens have hosted many charitable events, including "Cowboy Poetry" gatherings, barn dances, barbecues and weddings. Wanting to honor the agricultural legacy of the founding Stowell family and their own Italian heritage, they decided to plant a vineyard, although wine growing had not been successfully accomplished in Tehachapi. After much study, however, they determined that the warm, breezy days, cool evenings and organic soil of the Cummings Valley made this the perfect climate for the Primitivo Zinfandel to flourish. Over the years, the Souza Vineyard became a "family affair," and friends joined in to help nurture, prune and cultivate the tender plants by hand. The Souzas feel honored to be the first commercial vineyard in an historic agricultural valley. They invite you to visit, enjoy their wines and gift shop, and consider hosting an event at the vineyard. 26877 Cummings Valley Rd. • www.souzafamilyvineyard.com

Red House BBQ
The beginnings of Red House BBQ were simple. It started off as an idea and grew from there. When my family moved to Tehachapi around seven years ago, we found that there wasn’t a place in town that served the comfort food that I grew up with and loved. On a drive through town, my wife and I discovered a building that we sat in our car across the street from and I knew right then and there that it was going to be the future site of my dream. I told my wife what I wanted and that we needed to start small and test the waters.
We bought a BBQ trailer and we started cooking at local events. Indian Tacos were all the rage and soon we started introducing Pulled Pork, BBQ Chicken and Tri Tip. The response was great and we kept on moving forward. It took years to save the money and to await the availability of that little building we sat in front of. Then, it all happened.
We signed a lease and started construction Feb. 1, 2010. My idea was to hire the best people that I could, use the best ingredients and prepare honest hand crafted comfort food. Cutting corners was not an option. We have been rockin' ever since! A huge “THANK YOU” goes out to you Tehachapi, my wife and to my staff, the best in town. I am living my dream and I hope I never awake. Mano Lujan, Red House BBQ • www.redhousebbq.net.

BEST LOCAL CELEBRITY

Zach Skow (Marley’s Mutts)
I’m having a difficult time wrapping my head around being nominated best local celebrity. Even more perplexing is that the nomination was earned for my positive involvement in the community and not for offensive or nefarious reasons. About four years ago, I could hardly stand the thought of myself and was gravely ill. I needed a liver transplant, my soul was depleted, I couldn’t stop drinking and I had no hope. Those days are gone! About 3-1/2 years ago I founded Marley’s Mutts Dog Rescue to help save the dogs that had saved me. The dogs I worked with and the support of this community brought me back from the brink of physical and spiritual death. It means an awful lot of this community to consider me a celebrity because I equate that with respect, and genuine respect is something that I hadn’t made a habit of earning. I have had the privilege of speaking at every school in our community as well as other institutions and organizations. I am so very humbled that people would ask me to speak about our organization with the intent of helping in any way they can. I make a habit of getting the word out any way I can, which is particularly nerve-racking because contrary to popular belief, I’m not comfortable in front of groups or a camera. I believe a man is a success when he has earned the love of children and the respect of intelligent men — and I have gained those things in this community and am extremely grateful for that. I never thought that I would be comfortable in this town or that I would find my niche, but boy was I wrong. I have definitely found my home. Zach Skow, Marley’s Mutts • www.marleysmutts.com

Tehachapi Food & Wine Festival
With a mere 250 guests, the Tehachapi Food and Wine Festival had a humble start in 2007 as the Taste of Tehachapi. Created by Anthony McDemas in collaboration with the City of Tehachapi and Main Street Tehachapi, the festival was part of the city’s Independence Day festivities. The festival quickly grew and in it’s third year was moved to it’s own date on the first Saturday of August where it has been ever since. The festival has grown to attract several thousand people from the Bakersfield area, the Antelope Valley and is now a regional draw. Originally just eight restaurant and one winery the festival now offers fare from more than 25 restaurants and 25 wineries. A myriad of activities are now part of the festival from a fine arts gallery featuring local artists, to a "Farm to Fork" Chef Demonstration which combine fresh local  produce being prepared on stage by celebrity chefs from Southern California. A "Man-Cave" offers port wine and a cigar lounge, and with three venues of music, entertainment abounds. Next year’s festival on Saturday, August 3, 2013, will offer new surprises which will add to the many attractions. The Tehachapi Food & Wine Festival also spawned an entire weekend of fun dubbed the "Discover Tehachapi Weekend" which features the Tehachapi Poker Trail that helps locals and visitors weave their way through venues ranging from Mountain Valley Gliderport to Souza Family Vineyard. The Tehachapi Food and Wine Festival is proud to include numerous non-profit and community organizations from the Kiwanis to the Greater Tehachapi Economic Development Council. www.tehachapifoodandwine.com

Tammy Engel, Mortgage Advisor
Since 1990 I have been writing home loans throughout the state of California. My relocation to Tehachapi in year 2000 allowed me to run my mortgage practice independently. Since that time it has been a pleasure to help local families achieve their dreams about home ownership. Planning real estate finance is more than just numbers on a page. It’s only through talking with people about what they want to achieve that we can best structure the use of their cash and equity. The fund comes from finding solutions better than my clients would have imagined possible. My clients benefit from one point of contact throughout their loan process — me. All loan applications are taken in person and I attend all loan document signings to be certain that final loan terms are exactly what was promised. Realtors and borrowers alike know where they stand throughout the loan process without having to chase me down. The community has my deep appreciation for acknowledging my efforts. This is not just a day job for me, it’s more of a call to be of service. I love knowing that when we meet again at the market or the library, I can look my clients in the eye and know I had their best interest at heart, and the updated knowledge and experience to give them a great mortgage experience. Thank you for nominating me in the “Best of Tehachapi Readers’ Choice Poll.” 822-7325 • www.TammyEngel.com

Tehachapi Veterinary Hospital
We at Tehachapi Veterinary Hospital have been a part of the community since 1986, and feel incredibly fortunate to have been entrusted to provide medical care to the companion animals of our friends and neighbors. Because our doctors live locally, have raised their families here and are active community members, they have a vested interest in providing the highest quality and most compassionate care possible. Given the nature of our business, we develop special relationships with our patients and their people. This relationship is enriched by the small, close-knit community in which we live. We strive to balance the medical needs of our patients, understand the emotional needs of our clients, and the realities of a family’s situation to help them make the very best decisions, especially in difficult circumstances. Our doctors and staff care deeply and are passionate about their chosen profession. Because clients care not only about their own pets, but also about homeless pets, we feel part of our service to them and our community is to provide free or discounted medical care to the rescues in the area. We work closely with Marley’s Mutts, Dobie SOS, German Shepherd Rescue, A-Pet Rescue, Rainbow Rescue, Tehachapi Humane Society, STOP, the SPCA and others. We so appreciate the recognition that our community and clients have given us by nominating us as one of the finalists in “Best of Tehachapi.” We look forward to many years of providing the best quality veterinary service to the people and pets of the Tehachapi area. 20693 Woodford-Tehachapi Road • www,tehachapivet.com
