Snow keeps schools closed but both Highway 58 and 5 are reopened

While schools in the Tehachapi Unified School District have been closed for the day due to snow and ice, both Highway 58 through Tehachapi and Intersate 5 over the Grapevine have been reopended.

Earlier this morning Tehachapi schools were on a two-hour delay, and schools in Caliente and Mojave remain on the delay.

Tehachapi Willow Springs Road remains closed from Backus Road to Highline, as well as Cameron Canyon and Oak Creeks Roads.

About a half inch of snow had fallen by 5 a.m. and by 6 a.m. there was nearly three inches on the ground in downtown Tehachapi with more at the higher elevations and snow continuing to fall.

The CHP responded to a single car rollover on Eastbound 58 about a mile east of the Sand Canyon offramp at about 5:30 a.m. The vehicle reportedly ended up 75 feet off the roadway with three injured. Hall Ambulance responded with a ground unit. An air ambulance was on standby but unable to fly due to the weather conditions.

Other traffic accidents and snow-related hazards have been reported throughout the early morning hours.

According to the National Weather Service, snow showers are expected to continue today and tonight with a chance of rain and snow on Saturday, mostly clearing by Saturday night and sunny by Sunday.

The high in Tehachapi today is expected to be near 39 with south southeast wind of 5 to 15 mph becoming west northwest this morning.

A total daytime snow accumulation of one to three inches is in the forecast at 4,000 feet.

Tonight there is a chance of snow showers with a low around 29 and a west wind around 14 mph with gusts as high as 20 mph. The chance of precipitation drops to 40 percent tonight and to 30 percent by Saturday.
