Four reported dead, one critical following crash on 58 east of 14

Four people died and a fifth was critically injured Monday afternoon in a single-vehicle crash on Highway 58 about 10 miles east of Highway 14 near Mojave, fire officials confirmed.

The vehicle went into the center divider of the highway, said Kern County Fire Engineer Corey Wilford. Multiple people were ejected in the crash at mile marker 178. The person with critical injuries was airlifted to a hospital.

Officers from the California City Police Department and California Highway Patrol, as well as the fire personnel were at the scene. A staff member at the California City department said their chief went to the scene. The circumstances of the crash were not immediately clear, other than a vehicle landed in a center median.

The No. 1 eastbound and No. 1 westbound lanes were closed, and it was unknown how long that would last. However, traffic was still flowing, according to the CHP website.
