The Tehachapi Police Department arrested a 56-year-old man in the 500 block of South Mill Street last night after he barricaded himself in his residence then fled to a backyard on Melrose Court, after he allegedly assaulted two females following a domestic dispute.
According to a news release issued by the Tehachapi Police Department, Stephen Anthony Damian was arrested on two misdemeanor and three felony charges, including inflicting corporal injury on a spouse or cohabitant, assault with a deadly weapon other than a firearm, and making threats with the intent to terrorize.
According to Tehachapi Police Chief Jeff Kermode, the TPD received a call around 9:09 p.m. from a 26-year-old female who said Damian had assaulted her and her mother after an argument between the two escalated into a fight.
The 26-year-old tried to intervene, police said, but at that point, Damian allegedly struck her in the head with a chair, pulled her hair, and twisted her neck.
Kermode said that when an officer responded around 9:11 p.m. he found the suspect and the 26-year-old victim standing in the front yard of the house. Kermode said the suspect then failed to comply with the officer and went back into the house and barricaded himself inside for 20 minutes.
At that point, he said, the younger of the two victims alerted the officers that her mother was still inside the house and was unconscious. She also told officers that Damian had possession of multiple firearms.
Police said they later discovered a handgun, two rifles, and a rifle stock inside the residence.
Two officers and one sergeant with the TPD, one officer from the Bear Valley Springs Police Department, and at least two Sheriff's deputies set up a containment around the house, Kermode said.
After barricading himself in the house for 20 minutes, Kermode said Damian then fled through the back door of the house and ran into the backyard of a home on Melrose Court. There, he was confronted by the homeowner and a Sheriff's deputy, who Damian initially struggled with before being apprehended.
The 52-year-old ― who was reported by police to have had a long-term dating relationship with the suspect ― was found with a swollen lip and a minor head injury. Police believe Damian struck her with the stock of a rifle, according to Chief Kermode.
He noted that the 26-year-old victim sustained a gash in her head and was later treated at the Tehachapi Hospital.
The Chief said alcohol was involved in the incident.
Kern County Superior Court records show that Damian was arrested in 2009 on charges of domestic battery.
Damian was booked into the Kern County Sheriff's Central Receiving Facility and is being held on a $107,500 bail. His next hearing is scheduled for Jan. 16 at 9 a.m. at the Kern County Superior Court in Mojave.
