A wildfire burning in the Sand Canyon area east of the city of Tehachapi has grown to at least 500 acres according to the Kern County Fire Dept.

An unconfirmed report is that the fire started when a boat trailer traveling through the area lost a wheel.

Highway 58 was closed in both directions for a time, but reportedly is currently open. Travelers are advised to proceed through the area with caution due to smoke and the arrival of more emergency vehicles.

Sand Canyon Road is closed and additional firefighting resources have been ordered.

Additional information will be posted online and on the Tehachapi News Facebook page as it becomes available.
