Travelers and Tehachapi residents can now visit the newly opened Pilot Flying J Travel Center to sample creamy frosting-covered Cinnabons, P J Fresh home-cooked food, Wendy’s walk in and drive-thru restaurant, premium coffee and cappuccino selections and other convenience store items.
The more than 14,000-square-foot building features an open floor plan and includes gasoline and diesel bays, parking for 107 trucks and 70 other vehicles, showers, restrooms, public laundry facilities, a Western Union ATM and driver’s lounge.
The building opened for business on Saturday, Dec. 2, with no formal announcement of a grand opening. The construction on the road and landscaping were among the last finishing touches completed in the past month.
Tehachapi resident Steve Harp purchased some P J Fresh food items to go Monday, stopping briefly to pick up some lunch before getting back on the road.
“I wanted to come in and check it out, other than stop just for fuel. It’s a change,” Harp said.
Many people lined up Monday to purchase food times from Wendy’s restaurant.
Brenda and Tom Fratus from Tehachapi heard about the opening, bought some chili and enjoyed the new seating at the center before heading home.
“We moved up here five years ago and missed Wendy’s," Brenda Fratus said. "We also like everything about the building. It’s very open.”
The property is located across from La Quinta Inn and Chevron on an 11-acre lot near the southwest corner of East Tehachapi Boulevard and Steuber Road. Construction began June 23.
According to a recent Pilot Flying J Travel Center news release, the center, located at 1668 E. Tehachapi Blvd. is the 22nd location in California and it is expected to contribute $5.4 million annually to state and local tax revenues. The center is to also provide 100 local jobs.
"We’re thrilled to serve the Tehachapi community and contribute to the local economy with our new travel center,” Ken Parent, president of Pilot Flying J, said in the news release.
He added, “Both Tehachapi residents and those traveling through the Kern County area will soon be able to enjoy the convenience and amenities of this Flying J Travel Center.”
