Every year Mrs. Kruger’s first grade class does a "Pay it forward". This is a planned act of kindness, or community service. This year’s class donated their time to help weed and maintain the community garden at Mama HillyBean’s Café.
The garden was in the process of being readied for the coming growing season and was the right match for the students as it was in need of some extra help. It also offered a wonderful opportunity for them to volunteer, learn about plants, how they grow, and where our food comes from.
Café owner, Hillary Melville was asked to explain to the students her vision behind the slogan, ‘Coffee and Community’ which was realized at the café as a place people could get together to eat healthy food, listen to music, make art, play and have a garden to share.
The students did a wonderful job pulling weeds, picking up trash, watering and even planted peppers and zucchini in their own planter bed. The public is invited to view the garden at 426 E. Tehachapi Blvd. at Mama HillyBean’s Café.
